OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to examine the appearance of fatigue in patients with MS, and it`s relationship with demographic parameters, disease type and the impact of immunomodulatory-therapy and to examine the impact of fatigue on quality of life. STUDY DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: The study involved 30 subjects with multiple sclerosis, who were being treated at the Clinic of Neurology, University Hospital Center Osijek. A self-created survey questionnaire, a modified fatigue impact scale (MFIS) and a quality of life questionnaire for MS patients (MS QoL-54) were used as research instruments. RESULTS: The study was conducted on 30 patients. The median fatigue scale speaks in favor of the fact that most patients have felt fatigue in the last 4 weeks. The age of the patients, the age at the onset of the first symptoms and EDSS are positively correlated with the overall fatigue scale and with the domains of physical and psychosocial fatigue. Married patients reported a higher degree of fatigue. Patients who report a higher degree of fatigue are more likely to have temporary or permanent incapacity for work. We did not observe a difference in the degree of fatigue between individual types of MS nor depending on the application and type of immunomodulatory therapy. Fatigue symptoms negatively correlate with overall quality of life and with all individual domains of quality of life. CONCLUSION: Fatigue is present in patients with multiple sclerosis. Patient age, older age at the time of disease onset, and the severity of motor symptoms negatively influence on fatigue symptoms. Married people have a more pronounced fatigue, and increased fatigue has a negative effect on work ability and on the overall quality of life and on all individual domains of quality of life.
