Objectives: The aim of the study is to determine the incidence and type of anemia in people with type 2 diabetes and to investigate whether there are differences in terms of age, gender and antidiabetic therapy. Study design: The study was conducted as a cross-sectional study. Participants and methods: The study included 78 patients with type 2 diabetes who were treated at Dom Zdravlja Osječko-baranjske županije between February and June 2022. Demographic and clinical data are collected from the history of the disease. Age, gender, antidiabetic therapy and underlying disease were recorded. Data on the presence of anemia were obtained from laboratory findings. Results: The study found that 19 % of patients with type 2 diabetes have anemia. Morphologically, it was most often normocytic, and most rarely macrocytic anemia. The most common was nonspecific anemia, followed by chronic disease anemia and mixed anemia. A significant association of anemia existance with older age and sulfonylurea therapy was observed. In people treated with metformin, a significant association between the first 5 years of therapy and the onset of chronic disease anemia, and metformin treatment lasting more than 10 years with the onset of mixed anemia, was observed. No significant difference was observed in the onset of anemia with regard to gender, nor with treatment with insulin, DPP-4 inhibitors, GLP-1 agonists or SGLT-2 inhibitors. Conclusion: Due to the high proportion of people with anemia, it is necessary to control the values of hemoglobin in people with diabetes mellitus, especially in those of older age and those who have been treated with sulfonylurea derivatives. Due to the large number of non-specific anemias, additional investigation of patients is often required.
