OBJECTIVES. To investigate the mortality of people who died from cirrhosis in the five-year period from 1992 to 1997 and determine the differences in the number of deceased sub-jects in the corresponding period from 2012 to 2017. To compare the differences in the examined periods considering age, gender, hepatitis B and C, alcoholism, esophageal varices and liver cancer. STUDY DESIGN. A cross–sectional study. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS. The study included 333 people died from liver cirrho-sis, 219 in the first period, and 114 people in the second corresponding period. Their data were obtained from the archives of the Clinical Institute for Pathology and Forensic Medicine at the Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek and the central hospital archive of the Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek. RESULTS. In the examination of the two time periods a slight decrease in the death toll was found, with 219 (65.8 %) in the first and 114 (34.2 %) in the second period. The second peri-od was marked by a decrease in the number of cases of esophageal varices (Fisher's exact test, P= 0,01), and significantly more frequent alcoholism (Fisher's exact test, P<0,001) and hepati-tis C (Fisher's exact test, P = 0.02). No significant difference was found between the periods regarding other variables. CONCLUSION. By studying two periods over a span of 20 years, a slight decrease in mortality from cirrhosis has been observed. For a better understanding of the emergence, trea-tment options and reduction of mortality, it is necessary to look at more factors across a wider range of time in a larger number of subjects.
