Research objective: To examine whether there are discrepancies in nurses’ knowledge and attitudes on organ transplants and donorship. Type of research: Cross-section study. Respondents and methods: 204 licences nurses working at the “Dr. Ivo Pedišić” General Hospital in Sisak took part in the research, in total 188 women and 16 men. A general questionnaire for collecting socio-demographic data was used, a validated questionnaire under the title “Attitudes on organ transplantation and explantation”, divided into three aspects: “Religion and Ethics” “Information” and “Science”, taken from the author of the questionnaire Nenad Karanović MD, PhD, developed independently and used for the purpose of previous research at the University Hospital Split. A quiz on organ transplant with 5 multiple-choice tasks was also used. Results: Results indicate that there are statistically relevant differences in the domain of “Religion and Ethics” as regards attitudes relevant to age, education level, and work experience. A collectively positive attitude on organ transplants and donorship was obtained. A statistically more relevant negative correlation of results was obtained in the domain of “Religion and Ethics” (p< 0.05) with nurses who only finished high school in comparison to those who finished college. Furthermore, a statistically more relevant negative correlation in attitudes on transplants and donorship was obtained in the group of nurses aged 50 - 65 in comparison to younger groups. Moreover, a relevant negative correlation in attitudes was observed in the group of nurses with employment history between 26 and 45 years in comparison to those with less experience. Conclusion: The conclusion relates to encouraging healthcare staff education, especially those who only have a high-school diploma through ongoing education, public panels and including the media in raising awareness on the need for organ donorship, as well as adapting it to all age groups.
