Objectives: To examine whether there is a connection between the age or sex of the individual histopathological subtype of papilloma. Study design: The study is structured as cross - sectional study. Participants and methods: The study was conducted among 74 patients with a diagnosis of papilloma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, treated with FESS method at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at Clinical Hospital Center of Osijek, for the last twenty years, from January 1996 to December 2015. The medical records were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Fungiform histopathological subtype was present in 41 patients (55 %), the inverted subtype in 33 patients (45 %) and not a single case of onkocytic subtype was recognized. Of the total number of lesions, only one squamous cell carcinoma was found and the share of malignant alteration amounted to 1 %. 81 % of new neoplasms were noted and 19 % of relapse. There was no connection between each subtype and relapse. There wasn't a significant correlation between sex and those subtypes of SP. However, in both histopathological groups of respondents of our study, statistically significant correlation between age and particular subtypes has been found. The median age of patients with fungiform papilloma was 45 years, while the inverted median was 59 years. Conclusion: In none of the groups, sex was not a predictor of disease, whereas the age was a significant etiological factor for the occurrence of a particular subtype of the SP. Therefore, timely set diagnosis, appropriate treatment of locally aggressive lesions of FESS, and continuously monitoring surgical patients are important in the treatment of papilloma. The number of relapses and frequency of malignant alteration, which are the main characteristics of the SP, is greatly reduced.
