Objectives: The main objective of this research was to investigate frequency of olfactory dysfunction and taste disturbance in SARS-CoV-2 positive patients. Other objectives were to show the degree of olfactory impairment using olfactometry as well as the frequency of associated symptoms and comorbidities and to investigate the extent of the change in olfactory dysfunction between two measurements. Study design: The research is organized as a prospective cohort study. Material and Methods: The subjects were patients who were confirmed to be infected with SARS-CoV-2 virus by RT-PCR and who were hospitalized at the Clinic of Infectious Diseases of the Clinical Hospital Center Osijek in the period from May 2021 to March 2022. Patients underwent two olfactometry tests using the Smell Diskettes olfactory test- the first one at the beginning of the study and the second one three months after the initial measurement. All patients filled out an evaluation questionnaire. Results: The results of this study show that 43 % of SARS-CoV-2 positive patients had olfactory dysfunction at the beginning of the research. More than half of the patients had certain comorbidities of which the most common were cardiac diseases and hypertension. The most common symptom was fever. Three months after the initial measurement, olfactory dysfunction was still present in 14 % of patients. Conclusion: Based on the results obtained in this study, we can conclude that the incidence of olfactory dysfunction in SARS-CoV-2 positive patients is 43 %. We can also conclude that there was a significant improvement in patient olfactory function between the two measurements.
