Objectives: Test the prevalence of depression in those who have recently had a heart attack according to the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, the level of depressive symptoms according to the PHQ-9 and PHQ-15 questionnaires, and whether there are differences between groups with and without depression in terms of sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidities and risk factors. Study Design: Cross-sectional study Participants and methods: The subjects were inpatients of the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases, University Hospital Center Osijek, who had a heart attack in the period from March to June 2022. The general questionnaire, PHQ-9 and PHQ-15 questionnaires, and HAM-D were used for data collection. Results: The study was conducted on 60 respondents who had recently had a heart attack, of whom 67% were men and 33% were women. Of these, a quarter of respondents showed clinically significant depression. Respondents most often complained of sleep disturbances and a feeling of tiredness or lack of energy. Conclusion: The study showed a significant parallel incidence of heart attack and depression. In the group of subjects with heart attack, there were no statistically significant differences between the depressed and non-depressed groups in relation to sociodemographic characteristics, risky life habits and age. Of the comorbidities, subjects with cerebrovascular disease were more likely to be depressed. Key words: myocardial infraction, depression, comorbidity
