Study objectives The objectives of this study are to gather, analyze and compare data on transmission of bloodborne diseases in transfusion medicine, as well as to compare said data to the general population and to determine the significance of blood-borne disease prevalence in transfusion medicine. Study design This research is designed to be a cross-sectional study which analyzes data from serological and molecular tests for markers of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV and syphilis infections. Participants and methods The participants of this research are all volunteer blood donors in eastern Slavonia which satisfy the criteria for blood donating and have donated blood in the last five years (2017. – 2021.) This study uses statistically analyzed dana of results of mandatory serological blood testing for the markers of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV and syphilis infections, as well as mandatory molecular nucleic acid amplification tests. The results yielded by this study are visualized with tables. Study results Out of the four mentioned blood-borne disease markers, hepatitis B appears most often among blood donors. In the span between 2017. and 2021. there were 28 positive reactoins in total, out of which 19 have shown presence of hepatitis B, 3 of hepatitis C, 1 of HIV and 5 of syphilis. Conclusion Eastern Slavonia has a low prevalence of blood-borne diseases due to citizens' awarness and a good preventive practice of the Clinical Institute of Transfusion Medicine in the Clinical Medical Center Osijek.
