Abstract (english) | THESIS GOAL: To determine the most common time stealers in the nursing practise on a daily basis; to establish the differences between the examinees with regards to their age, gender, education or managerial position and to examine the differences between the examinees concerning their position in the operating room, both in the surgical and non-surgical wards. EXAMINEES AND METHODS: The research has included four departments General Hospital “Dr. Josip Bencevic” in Slavonski Brod. Altogether, 89 nurse technicians took part in the research, 55 female and 34 male, aged between 24 and 63 with 5 to 42 years of work experience. Education-wise, 24 of the examinees have the higher or high expertise, while the remaining 65 have the medium expertise, conducted individually and anonymously from August until October of 2015. RESULTS: The majority of the examinees stated that each of the time stealers listed interfere sometimes or never during the working hours. Only the minority of the examinees stated that the time stealers listed always cause problems during the working hours. The participants marked “Say no” as the most common time stealer, while “Goals” and “Self discipline” were marked as the least common time stealers. “Phone”, “Visits”, “Priorities”, “Paperwork”, “Communication” and “Delegation” are more often perceived as time stealers than “Meetings”, “Procrastination” and “Deadlines”. “Phone” is more frequently seen as a problem among the higher managerial positions, while “Meetings” are never a problem for the non managerial employees. Female examinees more often find that “Phone” and “Visits” are time stealers than the male participants. For most of the male participants, “Meetings” never unnecessarily take time, unlike “Deadlines”, which cause problems more often for them than for the female participants. CONCLUSION: In order to facilitate the nursing practise, removing the time stealers becomes crucial. Firstly, it is necessary to set the priorities and determine the cause and effect of the problem behaviour, then, to define skills and knowledge needed to eliminate the time stealers, to set and record the deadlines and to delegate routine activities. Finally, it is necessary to build a habit among the staff to regularly analyse which factors steal time the most and to write down all of the time stealers that appear both in their professional career and their private life. |
