Objectives: To determine the connection between the detrimental effects of tobacco smoke on the nasal mucosa in terms of damage that results in reduced nasal airflow in smokers compared to the control (non-smoking) group. Study design: Cross-sectional study Participants and methods: The study included a sample of 80 participants who came to their regular checkup at the Clinic for Othorhinolaringology and Cranial and Neck Surgery at the University Hospital Center Osijek, in the period between January and June of 2017. The participants were divided into two groups, depending on the population of smokers they belonged to. The exclusion factors included subluxation and deviation of the nasal septum. The primary research method involved computerized rhinomanometry, a minimally invasive procedure designed to measure the air flow of nasal cavities which serves to determine nasal air flow resistance, including nasal obstructions, as well as the physical examination of the nose by means of anterior rhinoscopy and endoscopy. Results: There are no statistically relevant differences in the resistance of air flow in the nasal cavity between non-smokers and smokers in terms of inspiration and expiration while measuring pressures. Conclusion: Given the growing average resistance values in smokers, the absence of statistically relevant differences can be attributed to the limited number of participants in the study.
