OBJECTIVES. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of Nd:YAG capsulotomy in patients with secondary cataract comparing BCVA before and after laser treatment and to describe possible complications after performing laser procedure. STUDY DESIGN. Retrospective cohort study. PATIENTS AND METHODS. The study included 30 patients with secondary cataract, at the University Hospital Osijek, Ophthalmology Institute, from September to December 2016. Every patient underwent the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) on Snellen’s optotype evaluation and intraoccular pressure measurement using the Goldman tonometar before and after the surgery. All patients were operated on using Nd:Yag laser capsulotomy by the same surgeon. Demographic data (age, gender), intraocular pressure and visual acuity before and after Nd:YAG capsulotomy, intraocular lens type, and possible complications made bay Nd:YAG laser were extracted from the medical records. RESULTS. The best corrected median visual acuity of the right and left eye was 0,6 before the surgery. After the surgery the best corrected median visual acuity of the right and left eye was 1.0. No significant increase in intraocular pressure was observed in our study after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. Througout the study 3 of totally 30 patients had postsurgical complications, while the remaining 27 patients were without complications. Two subjects had an elevated IOP, i.e. above 22 mmHg, after Nd:YAG laser capsuleotomy. One of the patients had an IOP of 26 mmHg because of which he developed a secondary glaucoma. He was treated with antiglaucoma therapy. The second one had a transitory elevation of intraocular pressure that lasted one month. His IOP was 24 mmHg. The third patient had punctiform lesions of the IOL from after the surgery. CONCLUSION. Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy used for treatment of posterior capsular opacificationis very effective and improves the best corrected visual acuity. Although Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy has been found to be safe and effective, complications such as retinal detachment, movement of the IOL, CME, and rise of the IOP tend to occur after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy.
