Study goal. The aim of this study was to examine if there is a difference in the opinions of nurses / technicians about dysthanasia regarding the level of education, age and work place. Study Design. A cross-sectional study. Methods and participants. The research was conducted during September and October 2017 at KBC Osijek. The sample included 113 subjects, nurses / technicians. A survey questionnaire containing 38 questions was created for the purpose of this research. Results. When comparing the opinions, no statistically significant differences were found regarding the level of education. Statistically significant correlation was found in age-related opinions. The older the respondents were, the more they agreed with the claims that patients and families often have unrealistic expectations at the terminal stage, and also that useless therapy means suffering, not quality of life. In their opinion, such treatments should be terminated. They consider that the goal of treatment should be reduction of pain and suffering, and that the problem could be solved by opening palliative care facilities. Statistically significant differences were found in opinions regarding the work place. Anaesthesiology employees, in contrast to others, share an opinion that pharmacotherapy is more important than psychotherapy. In addition to that, they think that patient’s decision about DNR order was not respected. Conclusion. Additional education and training for nurses / technicians is necessary, especially regarding the topic of death, dysthanasia and euthanasia. It is important to expand public awareness about death as a natural process, educate the public about other therapeutic options and encourage healthcare to work on the development of palliative care and opening of hospices.
