Impact of LDL cholesterol on outcome of ischemic stroke Objectives: The primary objective of the study is to examine the association between LDL cholesterol and the outcome of ischemic stroke. Other goals are to examine whether there is a difference in the lipid profile of the subjects depending on revascularization therapy, depending on the COVID-19 pandemic, and depending on the outcome and severity of the ischemic stroke. Study design: cross-sectional study with the use of historical sources Participants and methods: The participants are all patients with acute ischemic stroke who were hospitalized at the Sveti Duh University Hospital, Department of Neurology, Stroke and Intensive Care Unit in the period from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2021. The data were collected from the medical history: demographic data, arterial hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, cardiomyopathy. Laboratory findings: total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Results: Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglyceride values were significantly lower (P < 0,001) in the group of subjects with a poor outcome. Also, the values of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides (P < 0,001) and HDL cholesterol were significantly lower in the group of patients with more severe clinical features on the admission. The triglyceride values were statistically significantly lower in the group in which revascularization therapy was not performed compared to the one in which it was. Conclusion: Lower LDL cholesterol values are associated with poor ischemic stroke outcomes. The most common comorbidities in the study are arterial hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Lower values of all observed components of the lipid profile are associated with a more severe clinical features on the admission. It was observed that the COVID-19 pandemic does not cause changes in the lipid profile.
