Title: The importance of psychological assessment in the treatment of patients with unilateral peripheral vestibular impairment Objectives: The aim of this study is to examine the correlation between anxiety in people with unilateral peripheral vestibular disorder in relation to gender, age, the existence of acute and chronic, compensated and uncompensated and partial and complete unilateral peripheral vestibular disorder and to determine the degree of free-floating and phobic anxiety, obsessiveness, somatic manifestations, depression and hysteria in these patients by filling in the Crown-Crisp experience index questionnaire. Study design: Cross-sectional study with historical data. Subjects and methods: The subjects were adults over 18 years of age with a diagnosis of unilateral peripheral vestibular damage based on the results of the bithermal caloric test and cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials. A total of 54 subjects were measured for common symptoms and personality traits within the conventional categories of psychoneurotic diseases and personality disorders using the Crown-Crisp Index of Experiences questionnaire. Results: The results show that 30 % of patients have pronounced somatic anxiety, depression in 15 %, free-floating anxiety in 9 %, anxiety in phobias and hysteria in 7 %, and obsessiveness in 2 % of patients. The median age for free-floating anxiety is 70 years, for somatic anxiety 65, and for anxiety in phobias 68 years. 89 % are compensated, and 94 % have partial vestibular impairment. There are no statistically significant differences in the existence of anxiety in relation to gender, age, the existence of acute and chronic, compensated and uncompensated and partial and complete vestibular impairment. Conclusion: The majority of patients have pronounced somatic anxiety, followed by depression, free-floating anxiety, anxiety in phobias and hysteria, and obsessiveness. No difference was observed in the existence of anxiety in relation to gender, age, type and character of unilateral peripheral vestibular impairment.
