AIM OF RESEARCH. The aim of this study is to determine and compare examinees in relation to their epidemiological and clinical characteristics. To determine the correlation among localization, size and stage of the primary tumor with the prevelence of metastases in cervical lymph nodes in patients who were surgically treated because of laryngeal carcinoma during the period from 2007 to 2011. To determine the outcomes of the disease with regard to the development stage and the treatment modality 5 years after the treatment. STUDY DESIGN. Cross – sectional study. STUDY SUBJECT, MATERIALS AND METHODS. The research included 52 laryngectomy examinees with the diagnosis of planocellular laryngeal carcinoma, treated at Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek during the period from 2007 to 2011. The research relied on the data obtained from the available medical documentation from the Department of Pathology and Forensic medicine and the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery. Analysis was also conducted on available archived histological tissue samples with standard (haematoxylin and eosin) stain. RESULTS. The examinees' median age at the initial stage of the disease is 64. The majority of the examinees (40 %) were diagnosed with advanced laryngeal crcinoma stage IV. Metastases in cervical lymph nodes were found in 50 % tumors of supraglottic localization, 81 % tumors size of 4 cm and more and 59 % advanced stages of tumor. The overall 5-year relative survival for all cancer stages is 48 %. If metastases appear in neck lymph nodes, the 5-year survival rate significantly drops from 60 % to 23 %.. CONCLUSION. Planocellular laryngeal carcinoma is most common among elderly men, who regularly consume alcohol and cigarettes. Most of them are admitted as advanced cancer patients. Positive correlation is established among tumor size, supraglottic localization and Tstage of primary laryngeal tumor and prevalence of metastasis in cervical lymph nodes. A 5-year survival rate significantly drops with the prevalence of metastasis in regional lymph nodes of the neck.
